چکیده

A four-channel microwave interferometer (center frequency: 60 GHz) has been constructed to measure plasma density profiles in the levitated dipole experiment (LDX). The LDX interferometer has a unique design owing to the unique geometry of LDX. The main design features of the interferometer are: (1) the transmitted beam traverses the plasma entirely in O-mode; (2) the interferometer is a heterodyne system employing two free-running oscillators; (3) four signals of data are received from just on transmitted beam; (4) phase shifts are detected in quadrature. Calibration tests demonstrate that the interferometer measures phase shifts with an uncertainty of approximately 5 degrees . Plasma densities in LDX corresponding to phase shifts of up to 5pi are routinely and successfully measured.

The Superconducting Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX)

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) explores the physics of high-temperature plasmas confined by a dipole magnetic field. Stable high-beta plasma has been created and confined by the magnetic field of a superconducting coil. Discharges containing trapped electrons form when microwaves cause strong perpendicular heating at cyclotron resonance. To eliminate the losses to the supports, the magne...

Production and study of high-beta plasma confined by a superconducting dipole magnet

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) [J. Kesner, et al. in Fusion Energy 1998 3, 1165 (1999)] is a new research facility that is exploring the confinement and stability of plasma created within the dipole field produced by a strong superconducting magnet. Unlike other configurations in which stability depends on curvature and magnetic shear, magnetohydrodynamic stability of a dipole derives fr...

Stationary density profiles in the levitated dipole experiment: towards fusion without tritium fuel

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is used to study hightemperature plasma confined by the magnetic field produced by a high-current superconducting ring. Multiple-frequency ECRH heats and sustains plasma discharges for long, quasi-steady periods, and conditions of high plasma beta are reached by adjusting the rate of neutral fueling. When the superconducting ring is levitated by attraction ...

Pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a magnetic dipole

Equilibrium pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a dipole magnet are reconstructed using magnetic and x-ray measurements on the levitated dipole experiment (LDX). LDX operates in two distinct modes: with the dipole mechanically supported and with the dipole magnetically levitated. When the dipole is mechanically supported, thermal particles are lost along the field to the suppo...

First integrated test of the superconducting magnet systems for the Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX)

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is an innovative approach to explore the magnetic confinement of a fusion plasma offering the possibility of an improved fusion power source. In this concept, a magnetic dipole (a superconducting solenoid) is magnetically levitated for several hours at the center of a 5 m diameter, 3 m tall vacuum chamber. The Floating coil (F-coil) is designed for a maximu...
